A lëgény két lân’ között aludt.^* [A lad/hero was sleeping between the two girls.]

Hej, jena mu je tiho govorila,
druga mu je ovak govorila,

„Hej, zemi mene Janči^** gospodine,
zemi mene Janči gospodine.”

Lassan mondta nëki, hogy vögyë el, a Jancsi. [She told him quietly: „Take me, Janči.”]

„Hej, Bogme nećem te, gizdava divojko,
Bogme nećem te, gizdava divojko.

Hej, mer^***  ti imaš srditoga brata,
Mer ti imaš srditoga brata.“

Isten bizony nem vöszlek ë ’ mër’ nëköd mirges bátyád van. [So help me God, I will not take you, because you have a wrathful brother.]

„Hej, mojmu bratu lehko nagoditi,
Crnom zemljom i zelenom travom.”

A bátyámnak könnyű-ë segíteni, fűvë’ és fekete fűdë’. [It is easy to hepl my brother, with grass and black soil.]

Hej, premetala listje i travicu,
premetala listje i travicu.

Elmönt a högyëk közé és ott széllël rakta a füvët, mög a levelet, amíg talált kígyót. [She went to the mountains and she rolled over the grass and leaves, until she found a snake.]

S.: Ja. A lány. [Yes. The girl.]

Hej, dok je našla kaču-jadovaču,

Hej, sinula je trimi šibljicami,
Sino, sinula je trimi šibljicami.

Hej, mögcsapta három vesszűvë’, három tűvë’ mögbökte. [Ej, she hit her with three little branches, and she stabbed it with three needles.]

Hej, piknula je trimi iglicami,
pipnula je trimi iglicami.

J. M.: De nem mondta, hogy mit csapott meg. [You did not tell whom she hit.]

S.: A kígyót csapta mög vesszűvë’ s utána mögbökte három tűvë. S mondja nëki, hogy kígyó engedjë’ vért.” [She hit the snake with branches, and then stabbed it with three needles. And said: Snake, let your blood out.]

Hej, pusti kača jada i čemera,
pusti kača jada i čemera.

Hej, pripravila malo ružno vince,
priprovilo malo ružno vince.

Akkor készítëtt vörösbort, hogy kígyó vërit bëlëkeverte. [Then she made red wine, and mixed the snake’s blood in.]

J. M.: Kinek? [To whom?]

S.:A bátyjának, hogy a bátyja igya mëg. [To her brother, so that her brother would drink it.]

Hej, njezin bratac tužno vushajaše,
njezin bratac tužno vushajaše.

„Hej, de si meni jedina sestrice,
davaj meni malo ladne vode.“

A bátyja gyütt haza a katonaságtól és kért tőle hideg vizet. S akko’ azt mondta a lány, hogy hideg vizem nincs, de vörösborom van. [Her brother has just returned from the army and he asked her for cold water. And then the girl said: I don’t have the cold water, only red wine.]

„Hej, ’ladnu vodu nimam, nego ružno vince,
’Ladnu vodu nimam, nego ružno vince.”

Hej, davala je svojemu bratiću,
„Pij ti, sestro, ti si postarejša!“

Átadta, átadta a lëgénynek. De a lëgény azt mondta: igyál të mert të idüsebb vagy. Az meg visszaadta a lëgénnek, hogy igyon a bátyja. [She gave, she gave to the lad. But the lad said: you drink, for you are older than me. And she returned it to the guy, so that her brother would drink.]

Hej, bratac pijal i s konjica opal
Bratac pijal i s konjica opal.

A bátyja ivott és akkor lëesett a lórú, és akkor ëlmönt a lán’ a lëgínhő akit, kedvese vót, hogy vögyë-e’.  [Her brother drank and fell from the horse, and then the girl went to the guy which was dear to her, to marry her.]

J. M.: Akihez férjhez akart menni. [The one she would like to marry.]

S.: Aki fërjhöz akart mönni és, hogy vögyë el. [The one she would like to marry, to take her.]

Hej, otišla je mladomu junaku,
Otišla je mladomu junaku,

„Hej, ženi mene Janči gospodine!“
„Bogme, nečem te, gizdava divojko,

Elmönt hozzá, hogy vögyë-el de azt mondta neki Isten bizony nem vöszlek-ë’. [She went to the guy to take her, but he said: „So God help me, I will not take you”.]

Hej, kak si bratu tak bi i junaku,
Kak si bratu tak bi i junaku!“

J. M.: Itt mi volt a végén? [What happened here in the end?]

S.:Itt vëgin az volt, hogy akko’ nem vötte el, a lán’t a lëgén’ nem vöttë el feleségül. [Here in the end it was that he did not take her, the guy has not marry the girl.]

J. M.:Félt attól, hogy őt is megmérgezik. [Because he was afraid that she would poison him.]

S.:Mert félt attól, hogy igen. Félt attú, hogy azt is mögmérgezi. [Because he was afraid, yes. He was afraid she would poison him too.]

J. M.: S mikor szokták ezt a balladát énekelni? [And on what accasion this ballad is sung?]

S.:Ezt amikor rëgen, szoktak lakodalmaskor, az, azt mondtuk láda, nem szekríny vó’t, hanem láda. Azt vitték a mennyasztú’, a vőlëgín’ házhó’ akkor az utcán végig ezt énekő’ték. [It used to be sung a long time ago, at wedding, we called it chest, there was no locker, but chest.^**** They were carrying it from daughter-in-law to the groom’s house, and on their way they sang this, walking down the street.]

J. M.: Ezt a balladát? [This ballad?]

S.: Ezt a balladát, az utcán végig énekö’ték, máshun sehunsë énekő’ték, mongyuk fonyóba vagy valahú’ bálba. Csak ilyenkor énekő’ték mikor lakodalom vó’t s akkor mëntek a ládáva’. Akko’ azok az asszonyok énekő’tek.  [This ballad they sang on their way in the street; in no other occasion they sang it, for example on spinning partie or at ball. Only in the wedding time, when they were transferring the chest. Then the women sang it.]
